There's a tiny metallic ping some guitars make when you turn a tuning peg. Customers imitate it for me at the bench all the time. That sound is a string binding in the nut slot and releasing all at once, and it's the single most common reason a guitar won't stay in tune.
It is not the only one. Below are the eight culprits I actually see, ranked roughly by how often they turn up, each with a fix and an honest note on whether it's a you-job or a tech-job.
Before touching anything, get a baseline:
- Open the online guitar tuner and check every open string
- Write down which strings drift and whether they go sharp or flat. That pattern is the diagnosis.
Why won't my guitar stay in tune? Match the symptom first
Guessing wastes strings. The drift pattern usually points straight at the cause.

That intonation row matters. If open strings hold 0 cents on the tuner but chords sound sour at the 7th fret, tuning stability isn't your issue and nothing on this page will fix it. Guitar intonation is its own repair with its own guide.
1. New guitar strings won't stay in tune (they need stretching)
Fresh strings drift flat. All of them, every brand. The metal stretches, the winds around the post settle, the ball end seats into the bridge, and each of those movements bleeds a few cents of pitch.
Stretching by hand compresses two days of settling into ten minutes:
- Tune to pitch.
- Grab a string around the 12th fret and pull it up an inch or so. Firm, slow, no yanking.
- Slide your hand toward the nut and pull again, then toward the bridge.
- Retune. The string will read flat. That's the slack coming out.
- Repeat until a stretch leaves the tuner needle where it was.
Plain strings need more rounds than wound ones. On a fresh set of 9s I usually go four or five passes before the high E stops arguing.
And old strings fail the same test in the opposite direction. Work-hardened, corroded strings lose elasticity and wander unpredictably no matter what you do. If you can't remember the last string change, that is the fix, and it costs less than any hardware upgrade.
2. Sloppy winds around the tuning post
The post doesn't slip. The mess wrapped around it does.
Too many wraps stack and shift under tension. Wraps crossing over themselves create kinks that release later, mid-song. Knots are worse (please don't tie knots).
What holds: leave about two to three post-widths of slack when you string up, then wind two to three neat wraps on wound strings, three to five on plain ones, each wrap spiraling downward toward the headstock face. The downward spiral increases the break angle over the nut, which keeps the string seated.
Locking tuners sidestep all of this with a half wrap. They're a genuine upgrade for tremolo players. For everyone else, in my experience, neat winds on stock tuners hold just as well — the tuners themselves are almost never the guilty party, even the cheap ones. Check that the little mounting screws and bushing nuts are snug and move on.

3. The nut is pinching your strings
Back to that ping. The nut slots guide each string from the tuners onto the fretboard, and when a slot is cut too narrow, or its edges are rough, the string drags through it instead of gliding.
So tension builds on one side of the nut while you tune. Then it releases all at once and the pitch leaps past the target. Bend a note and the same thing happens in reverse. G and B strings suffer most because of the sideways angle they take behind the nut on many headstocks.
Safe home fix. Loosen the string, lift it out of the slot, and rub a sharp No. 2 pencil in there until you see graphite. Reseat, retune, done. I do this on every setup that crosses my bench and a 50-cent pencil has rescued guitars whose owners were pricing new tuning machines.
If the ping survives the graphite, the slot needs reshaping with gauged nut files. That's tech territory. Filing a slot too deep ruins the nut, and now you're buying a nut and the labor..
4. Electric guitar won't stay in tune after using the tremolo
A non-locking trem is a tuning compromise you accept in exchange for the wobble. Every dive changes the tension balance between strings and springs, and anything with friction in the system keeps the bridge from returning to exactly where it started.
Things that help, in the order I try them:
- Do the return test. Depress the bar hard, release, check the tuner. If pitch lands somewhere new every time, the system isn't returning to rest.
- Lubricate the contact points. Nut slots, saddle grooves, the string trees on a Strat-style headstock. Graphite again.
- Check the springs in the back cavity and make sure the claw screws aren't loose.
- Not a whammy user? Deck the bridge flat against the body, or have a tech block it. Stability improves dramatically and you lose nothing you were using.
A tune-o-matic or hardtail has no excuse for movement. If a fixed bridge wobbles, posts lean, or a saddle rattles, snug what's loose and let a tech assess anything that won't tighten.
5. A Floyd Rose that won't stay in tune
Floyds are their own animal. Locked at the nut and at the saddles, a well-set-up Floyd is the most stable tremolo there is. A badly set-up Floyd is a science project.
The usual suspects run in this order. Strings weren't stretched before the nut clamps went down, so they kept settling with no way to correct. Knife edges are worn or gunked where they pivot on the posts. Spring tension doesn't match string tension, so the baseplate sits tilted instead of parallel to the body.
Stretch thoroughly, lock the nut last, and use the fine tuners for everything after. If the knife edges are visibly rounded off, stop. Replacement parts and a proper float-balancing session at a shop cost less than fighting it for a year.
6. Temperature and humidity swings
Wood moves. A guitar coming in from a cold car goes sharp as it warms, then settles somewhere else entirely. Dry winter air shrinks a top and drops the whole tuning flat.
Same Strat comes back to my bench every January, every year, from the same customer with the same forced-air heating. Nothing is broken. His house just spends winter at 20% relative humidity.
Let the instrument acclimate for ten minutes before you retune it after travel. Keep it away from radiators, vents, and sunny windows. Acoustics in dry climates want a case humidifier targeting roughly 45–50% RH. That's it, and no product fixes physics faster than patience does.
7. Your fretting hand and your tuning habit
Two player-side causes, both free to fix.
Heavy fingers pull strings sharp. Press a chord with a death grip while watching the tuner and you can watch notes climb several cents. Jumbo frets and scalloped boards exaggerate it. Lighten up and the guitar "improves" instantly.
Tuning direction matters too. Always finish by tuning up to the note. Coming down from above leaves slack in the gear train and the string keeps drifting flat as it settles. Overshot? Drop below the target and come back up. This habit alone stabilizes vintage-style tuners that people swear are faulty, and tuning by ear drills the same up-to-pitch instinct.
A capo belongs in this section as well, something the big competitor articles skip entirely. Clamping one on pulls every string slightly sharp, more if it's a heavy-spring trigger capo. Tune with the capo on if the song uses one.
8. Everything else, briefly
Left-field causes I still meet on the bench. String trees with sharp grooves grabbing the B string. Pickup magnets set so high they drag the string (wobbling, endless sustain-warble above the 12th fret, drop the pickup). A strap button loose enough that the neck flexes against your body. One customer's mystery drift turned out to be his habit of hanging the guitar by the headstock on wall hook in a heated garage.
None of these is common. All of them are real.

A full setup, which bundles neck relief, action, intonation, and nut work, runs $50–100 at most shops. Per hour of frustration saved it's the best money in guitar.
The 60-second stability check
Once a week, or before anything that matters:
- Open the guitar tuner, tune every string up to pitch.
- Bend the G string a whole step, twice. Recheck. More than a couple cents flat means the nut or winds are moving.
- Strum hard once, recheck. Sharp spikes that settle back are normal. Sharp that stays is a seating problem.

Guitars that pass all three checks hold tune for days of normal playing. Mine get retuned at every session anyway, out of respect for how much wood moves between Tuesday and Friday.
FAQ: guitar won't stay in tune
Why does my guitar keep going out of tune so fast?
Fast drift, within minutes of tuning, is almost always strings. Either new ones that haven't been stretched or old ones past their elasticity. Drift over hours points at climate, and drift only after bends or whammy use points at the nut and bridge. The symptom table at the top of this guide maps each pattern to its fix.
Why won't my guitar stay in tune even with new strings?
New strings are the least stable strings on earth until they're stretched. Tune up, pull each string firmly at the 12th fret, retune, and repeat four or five rounds. If a week-old set still drifts, look at the winds on the post and the nut slots, in that order.
Are cheap tuners the reason my guitar goes out of tune?
Almost never, and I say that as someone paid to replace them. Tuning machines hold a string by a worm gear that physically can't creep backward under string tension. What slips is messy string wraps around the post, or the string hanging up in the nut and releasing later. Fix those first. Upgrade tuners for feel or for locking convenience, not as a stability cure.
Do locking tuners keep a guitar in tune better?
They remove the wrap problem, since the string clamps with under one full turn around the post. Trem users feel a real difference. On a fixed-bridge guitar with clean winds, the improvement is small — nut condition matters far more.
My guitar is in tune open but out of tune when I play chords. Why?
