How to Tune a Bass With an Online Bass Tuner

Play one string and let it settle
Pluck with a moderate attack and mute the other strings. Bass notes often begin slightly sharp, so read the needle after the initial attack.

A left reading is flat, so tighten the string. A right reading is sharp, so loosen it. The center turns green when the pitch is in tune.

Tune low to high, then repeat
Work from low E to G on a 4-string, or low B upward on extended-range basses. Check every string again after the first pass.

5- and 6-string bass

Yes, although low notes need a clean signal and a moment to settle. Tune in a quiet room, pluck with a moderate attack, and hold the device near the bass or amplifier. A low B is easier to detect through a small amp or audio interface than from an unplugged solid-body bass.
How accurate is an online bass tuner?
The tuner reports pitch in cents, where 100 cents equals one semitone. Room noise and the sharp attack at the start of a bass note can move the reading, so judge the sustained part of the note rather than the first instant after the pluck.
Can I tune a 5-string or 6-string bass?
Yes. Choose 5-string standard for B E A D G or 6-string standard for B E A D G C. The string buttons and targets update to match the selected preset, including the low B and high C.
