Standard tuning (E-A-D-G-B-E for guitar) is the foundation of Western guitar playing. It offers an optimal balance between chord playability, scale patterns, and range. The intervals between strings allow for consistent fingering patterns across the fretboard, which is why virtually all instructional materials, chord charts, and tablature assume standard tuning. Master this tuning first, and all other tunings will make more sense.
