Standard seven-string tuning is B1 E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4, low to high. The top six strings remain ordinary E standard; the seventh string adds B1 through D#2 below the old low E.

Use the custom tuner, select seven strings, and enter the octaves shown below.

This is why standard is the best first tuning for a new seven-string. It preserves the familiar fretboard and adds exactly five lower pitches: B, C, C#, D, and D#. Strandberg's extended-range guide makes the same distinction.

How to tune a 7-string guitar cleanly

  1. Configure B1 E2 A2 D3 G3 B3 E4 in the custom tuner.
  2. Mute six strings and pluck one string near the bridge.
  3. Tune upward into each note, starting with B1.
  4. Wait about half a second after the pick attack before judging the reading.
  5. Make a second pass after all seven strings are at pitch.
  6. On a floating tremolo, keep cycling until two consecutive passes need no correction.

If a phone microphone cannot hold B1, play the 12th-fret harmonic on the seventh string. It is B2, exactly one octave higher, so it tracks the same open-string tension while giving the microphone a clearer signal. Confirm the open string once the tuner stabilizes.

7-string standard tuning string gauges

Gauge advice without scale length and tension is mostly noise. A useful baseline is the low B's actual tension:

Starting pointPublished low-B tensionUse it when
.010-.059 seven-string set15.9 lb at B1normal pick attack; familiar 10s feel
.011-.064 seven-string set18.8 lb at B1firmer low end; heavier overall feel

Those figures come from D'Addario's charts for its .010-.059 set and .011-.064 set.

Our preferred target is roughly 16-19 lb on the low B, then matching the feel of the other wound strings. A longer 26.5-inch scale produces more tension than 25.5 inches with the same string and pitch, so do not automatically buy a thicker set for the longer guitar. Put the real scale length into D'Addario's tension calculator.

If only the B feels loose, replace only that gauge or build a custom set. Moving every string from 10s to 11s to fix one weak string makes the top six unnecessarily stiff.

B standard on 7-string vs 6-string guitar

These tunings share a lowest note but not the same interval map:

InstrumentLow-to-high tuningResult
7-string standardB E A D G B Esix-string E standard plus low B
6-string B standardB E A D F# Bevery string shifted down a fourth

The G string is the giveaway. If a seven-string tab says standard, use G3, not F#3. Tuning it to F# copies the top of six-string B standard and breaks familiar chord and scale shapes.

7-string guitar tuning problems

Low B reads sharp immediately after the pick

The pick is bending a loose string sharp. Read the sustained pitch, use less attack, or move toward a higher-tension low-B gauge. Tuning the settled note flat to compensate makes soft notes flat.

B1 is correct but the 12th fret is sharp

Compare the 12th-fret harmonic and fretted note. If the fretted note is sharp, lengthen the string at the saddle; if flat, shorten it. Recheck after every small movement with the intonation procedure.

Chords turn to mud when the seventh string rings

Do not let B1 ring under every six-string chord. The seventh string is an extension, not a permanent drone. Practice ordinary E, A, and D shapes while deliberately muting B1 with the fretting-hand thumb or fingertip.

A 5-minute seven-string orientation drill

Set the metronome to 60 BPM. Play B1-C2-C#2-D2-D#2 on frets 0-4, then play open E2. Repeat while saying the notes. This teaches the five new pitches without relearning the other 90% of the fretboard.

FAQ about standard seven-string tuning

Is standard seven-string tuning Drop A?

No. Standard is B E A D G B E. Drop A lowers only the seventh string to A1: A E A D G B E.

Can a normal guitar tuner hear B1?

A chromatic tuner with a low enough detection range can. If the room or microphone masks 61.74 Hz, use the 12th-fret B2 harmonic and mute every other string.

Should a 25.5-inch seven-string use a .064 low B?

Only if you want the firmer feel. A .059 is a credible baseline; choose by measured tension, attack, and intonation rather than scale-length folklore.
